How to maintain a habit

It can be difficult to develop and maintain a habit. It is especially true, the longer the period, that you want to stick with the habit. Don`t worry, if you are like most people, it is something that everyone finds hard to maintain.

Whether you want to eat healthier, do more exercise or have a set goal to finish a certain number of books in a year. I totally get it. Learning from my own experience, it is something that you definitely find hard to control and will sometimes fail. And a lot of times, it may seem like impossible to maintain one, and it is even harder to endure having to then to have a hard reset on your mindset and start over.

What important is to have the right mindset going forward. Going forward, this is what I personally learned from experience on what to do when you want to start and maintain a habit.

1. Identify the habit that you want to develop and maintain

Having too many things in mind, can result in a discouragement. First things first, it is important to identify the goals that you want to achieve. Identify what you want to do, and then break down the steps that you can take.

2. Plan the routine that you can follow

Everyone has their own abilities and weaknesses. Make sure you know what you can and cannot do. Starting with a too high goal may helps you in the short run, but in the long run, you will find yourself discouraged by it. Plan what is it that you want to do to each day. Write on a piece of paper and sticking it to the wall or somewhere, that you can see each day, to remind yourself and not lose focus. Start small but increase it daily or weekly.

3. Do

As per word of a named-brand clothing company, “Just do it”. Thinking too much about it everyday can be a burden to your mental capacity. Save that capacity for a larger decision.

4. Remind yourself to not give up

At first, it may seem hard and impossible, but that is also fine. Think about it just like homework when you were still in school. You may forget about it or even decided that it is too much to do, but even then, you will not stop going to school right? Even if you fail on that assignment, it only reminds yourself to do better next time.

5. Do not stop to encourage yourself

Romanticize yourself. Think yourself as the main character of an action movie that is going through a training montage scene. It is important to not lose focus and keep things in track. Give yourself a pep talk and yes – you can do it.

6. Reward yourself

Look back on what you have done so far. You have done a lot. When you achieve that goal that you want, it is also important to reward yourself. Especially if it is something over a longer period of time. Why do you think athletes and bodybuilders have their cheat days? It is to reward themselves on their hard work on that week.
